First time visiting Rocky Point?

A practical quick guide for the drive, the border, and resort arrival.

What is Rocky Point?

Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point, is the closest beach destination for many people in Arizona.

How long does it take from Phoenix?

Plan on roughly 4 to 5 hours from Phoenix. Friday afternoons, Saturdays, and holiday weekends can add border wait time at Lukeville/Sonoyta.

Can I fly there?

Rocky Point does not currently have a major international airport for typical guest travel. The easiest option is usually flying into Phoenix and driving down.

What insurance do I need?

Mexican vehicle insurance is required. US policies generally do not cover accidents in Mexico. You can buy daily coverage online or near the border before crossing.

What happens at the border?

Proceed slowly when the light turns green. If officials want to inspect your vehicle, they will direct you where to park. Translation apps are helpful if instructions are unclear.

What can I not bring into Mexico?

Do not bring weapons, ammunition, vapes, narcotics, fireworks, pork, poultry, beef, or more than $10,000 in cash. Mexico treats weapon and ammunition violations very seriously.

Do I need Spanish?

You can navigate Rocky Point without being fluent. Many people in tourist areas speak some English, but Google Translate is useful and courteous.

How should I pay?

The resort accepts credit cards. Smaller restaurants may prefer cash. US dollars are commonly accepted, though pesos can offer a better exchange rate.

Is the ocean safe?

Usually, yes, but respect it. Watch for seasonal jellyfish or stingrays, use the stingray shuffle near shore, understand riptides, and supervise children closely.
